Weekend Workshop

Phoenix Art Space, Brighton

Join textile artist Deborah Manson to learn how to make beautiful natural blues and patterns on cloth using indigo dye and resist dyeing techniques such as katazome and shibori.

Deborah will demonstrate how to make an indigo vat and you’ll learn how to make a rice resist paste (katazome) and experiment with Japanese folding and tying techniques (shibori).

Bring along some lightly coloured cloth to dye, or something you’d like to transform like a garment or homeware. Indigo works best on natural fabrics such as linen, cotton, wool and silk.

The weekend will give you an opportunity to experiment with the magic of indigo dye and a range of pattern and mark making techniques with the emphasis on experimentation.

The course is suitable for beginners and those with more experience.

Most materials will be provided but participants must bring along the following:

  • A range of lightly coloured fabrics, 100% cotton, linen, silk or wool.

  • Rubber gloves

PLEASE NOTE : COTTON /LINEN FABRICS MUST BE PRE-WASHED AT A HIGH TEMPERATURE (90oC). SILK AND WOOL MUST ALSO BE PRE-WASHED AT A LOWER TEMPERATURE.
